Sculptures Created From Vintage Typewriters

Artist Jeremey Mayer takes apart old typewriters and reassembles them into anatomically correct human figures. Jeremey creates his work through a process he calls cold assembly, which basically translates to no solder, welding, or glue.

BMW M Series Carbon Racer Bike

BMW announces the launch of its exclusive M Series Carbon Racer Bike, which will be available from all BMW dealerships in the UK, starting July 2011. BMW has over 60 years of experience in bicycle manufacturing, so it comes as no surprise that this bike unites the highest level of riding comfort with exceptional design. The BMW M Bike Carbon Racer is unrivaled in its combination of technically, sophisticated equipment and exclusive design. The summer of 2011 will be all about “sheer driving pleasure” for every BMW owner, even those with two-wheeled vehicles. Further details into the design are offered below.
High performance and athleticism, combined with being suitable for everyday use, are the stand-out qualities of the BMW M Series, and now the dynamics of BMW M cars can also be found on two wheels. Thanks to high-tech materials and components, the BMW M Bike Carbon Racer is a high-performance racing machine. Its distinctive frame has been designed in an anthracite carbon look, while coloured accents on the rims, handlebar grips, and saddle inlay in the typical BMW M red colour show off the origins of this top-quality bike. Anyone that hops in the fi’zi:k Tundra 2 saddle will quickly realize that this is only the beginning of the bike’s captivating appeal.
For those watching the BMW M Bike Carbon Racer ride by, it’s love at first sight – and there usually isn’t time for a second look with this racing machine. So it really pays to take a look at the frame, which is the heart of every bike. For the new BMW M Bike Carbon Racer, BMW’s developers constructed a carbon frame that is extremely light and stiff, absorbs shocks, and is absolutely corrosion-free. BMW doesn’t use any mass-produced elements in its fleet of bicycles, instead working only with frames it develops itself. And with Shimano Ultegra gears, you can quickly get the 7.4 kg racing bike moving at top speed.
Whether for athletic endeavors or recreational riding, every detail is perfect when you hit the pedals of the BMW M Bike Carbon Racer. This high-performance bike truly stands out as a result of carefully selected components and the perfect coordination of all the top-quality parts. Even in extreme conditions, the Shimano Ultegra brakes and gear levers allow the rider to change gears quickly, and the uncompromising lightweight design allows for particularly fluid braking. The chain and cassette provide a perfectly smooth transmission of energy both on flat areas of road and on difficult slopes.

Julian Assange Vs Facebook

Julian Assange, the man behind the Wikileaks scandal, recently sat down with Russia Today to talk about, among other things, Facebook privacy. In the remarkably disturbing interview, Assange claims that Facebook is “an appalling spying machine” that is readily accessible to U.S. intelligence agencies. It doesn’t stop there though, he also asserts that Facebook, along with search engine giants Google and Yahoo, have built in interfaces that the feds can use to gather all the intel they desire without going through the courts at all.

The Hindu Community Is Mad About This Swimsuit

The swimsuit, as you can see, features a print representation of Lakshmi, a Hindu goddess. Visual representations of deities are nothing new, when applied to swimwear though, they can certainly provoke an emotional reaction. And provoke this one-piece did. Since the image ran on Fashionising.com our editors have been filtering out hundreds of comments about the piece, none of them pleasant. Largely aimed at the label and its designer Lisa Burke, they’ve ranged from statements of concern to mild slurs, and at the other end of the spectrum have also included curses and all out death threats.
For their part, the Lisa Blue label has apologised for using the image of the Goddess Lakshmi in such a way. They have also confirmed that the swimsuit that has caused the outrage will be removed from their spring 2011 collection and shall never be produced or offered up for sale.

The Pennsylvania Academy Of Fine Arts

Founded in 1805 by Charles Willson Peale, the preeminent painter of George Washington, and a band of fellow artists, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is the oldest institute for the study of the arts in the new republic. Following a fire at its original home on Chestnut Street and subsequently out growing the reconstructed space, it moved to its present home on the corner of Broad and Cherry Streets in 1876.

This new home was designed by Frank Heyling Furness and his partner George Hewitt in time for the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. One hundred years later, just in time for the bicentennial, the building was masterfully restored.

Furness’ architecture is brutal, heavy, and highly decorative in a style that is much his own. Forcefully juxtaposing elements from various influences, his designs moved outside the typical Romanesque Revival more typical of contemporaries like Henry H. Richardson. His unique approach was hugely influential on the great American architects Louis Sullivan and Franky Wright. Though his work drifted out of a favor, he found a new champion in the historian Henry-Russell Hitchcock, who praised Furness’ ugly approach to beauty.

Unfortunately many of his even more impressive buildings have been since demolished. Access to the equally impressive Fisher Fine Arts Library is limited to those with a student ID. Nonetheless, the PAFA building stands as a prime example of his master craft. The stout and heavy columns capped with gothic arches are a perfect demonstration of his integration of Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic principles. They pay homage to Violet Le-Duc and John Ruskin, though Furness never formally studied at a university or traveled outside the US.

The combination of terracotta and stone ornament with decorative brick patterns is visually striking, and the overall massing and composition gives a simultaneous feel of heaviness and lightness that suits this museum and school well. The cast iron lamps incorporate a near machine-like aesthetic. Many of his other non-surviving works were for train terminals and banks. They reflected the ideals of the post Civil War industrial-era, which Furness learned through his experiences with the war and railroads.

In 1969 he was memorialized by the Philadelphia Chapter of the AIA, which he founded, as its “great architect of the past.” In 1975 this site was designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Human Multimedia Lab: Paper Computing Devices

Designed by the researchers at Queen’s University’s Human Multimedia Lab, the “paperphone” and “snaplet” are two fully functional paper computing devices controlled by the bending of their screens. Featuring a 3.7-inch flexible electrophoretic display with 2-inch long bidirectional bend sensors, the “paperphone” is capable of use as a phone, music player, book reader and navigator. Its sister device, the “snaplet”, is worn on one’s wrist and can be transitioned from use as a thin-film, touch-screen computer to an actual phone by removing the wristband and bending the screen. The two devices will be presented soon at the annual CHI Conference in Vancouver, Canada.

Shepard Fairey “The Print Show” @ Magda Danysz Gallery Recap

Considered as “the most influential street artist of our time” by the Institute of Contemporary Art of Boston, Shepard Fairey (aka Obey) has always considered posters a valuable form of art. Relentlessly he has pasted posters all over the world, renewing his visual codes through the years, building up a real language. In a show where about 200 prints have been gathered over a period of ten years, Magda Danysz Gallery puts his work on display. Mixing Soviet propaganda cause with heavy metal imagery, or psychedelic letterings makes it an incredible testimony of the rise of the graphic culture.
